
Joseph C. Sabbath, MD, was born in Montreal in 1922. After graduating from McGill University and Medical School he completed an internship in Paris and Edinburgh followed by a psychiatric residency at Worcester State Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He was an attending physician at McLean Hospital, Massachusetts Mental Health and served on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School. He practiced psychiatry in Brookline for many years finally retiring at the age of 78.
Dr. Sabbath was a true Renaissance man. His interests were diverse. Together with his wife Marcia, he travelled the world and visited many exotic locations. He was a gifted linguist learning many local languages including French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Farsi, Afghan, Thai, Russian, Mandarin, Japanese and most recently, Yiddish. A lifelong student, Dr. Sabbath was an active member of the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement until the age of 93.
He enjoyed collecting high quality wine, rare antique medical books, Eskimo art and horticultural prints. His award winning vegetable garden was featured in Boston Magazine.
Dr. Sabbath is survived by his wife Marcia (Caplan) Sabbath of 66 years, his twin sister Phyllis Vassall of Montreal, his children Pam (David) Berkson, Kert (Karen) Sabbath, grandchildren Erika Sabbath (Nick Teich) and Lauren Sabbath, Dena and Jared Berkson and his great grand-daughter Rebecca Sabbath Teich.
The funeral will take place on Sunday, July 23, 10AM at the Sharon Memorial Park Chapel, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon, MA.
The family will be observing a period of mourning at NewBridge on the Charles Sunday afternoon from 2-4PM.
