Dr. Lester A. Steinberg, a long-time Newton resident and physician in Greater Boston, passed away, peacefully in his sleep, on December 16, 2023. Lester was 104 years old. Lester was born in Penns Grove, NJ.
Lester was a wonderful family man, having married Esther Saxe of Newton, MA in 1948. They had three children, Robert, Jane, and Bill. The family settled in a beautifully cared for home on Fuller Street in Newton that was Lester’s favorite place. Esther passed away too soon, in 1987. Despite being alone, Lester continued to be active in the lives of his children and grandchildren, who knew him as “Pop”, attending sporting events, shows and holiday dinners, and being a major contributor to the education of all his children and 5 grandchildren.
Lester was a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. and the Hunneman Medical School in Philadelphia, from which he earned his MD. After medical school, Lester joined the Air Force and was assigned to a ship traveling to Greenland.
In 1947, he came to Boston to do his residency, and in 1951 Lester joined the staff of Beth Israel Hospital as a general practitioner and cardiologist. He attended to patients at multiple hospitals in the Greater Boston area. He was also the medical director of The Recuperative Center, a rehab center in Roslindale.
Lester moved to Newton Highlands in 1998 and continued to practice medicine until he was 86 years old. Until Covid, Lester was an active participant at the Beth Israel Hospital, attending morning meetings there every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; rarely missing a meeting.
Lester leaves his three children, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren as a legacy to his life very well lived. A private family graveside service will be held at the Newton Cemetery on Jan. 5th to celebrate his extraordinary journey.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Esther Steinberg Fund or Art in Bloom Fund), or to the Newton Free Library would be deeply appreciated.
