Margot Bloch of Boston and Falmouth Massachusetts died at age 93 on August 2nd 2024. She was born Margot Bendit in Furth Germany in 1931, the daughter of Leo and Lilli Bendit. The Bendit family had lived in Furth for more than 200 years and was known for being glass makers. She and her family were fortunate that a grandfather had purchased Swiss citizenship in the 1920s, which permitted them to escape from Nazi Germany. The Bendit family lived in Switzerland between 1939 and 1942, when they were able to emigrate to the United States. Margot grew up in Kew Gardens, New York and attended college at Syracuse and New York University. She met her future husband, Kurt Bloch, while vacationing with her family in the Catskills, where he worked as a waiter, supporting himself through medical school. They were married in 1953. Margot became a math teacher, working initially in New York City and subsequently in Brookline, Massachusetts where she and Kurt raised their two sons, Kenneth and Donald. After teaching for many years, she became a medical research assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she worked for more than 25 years.
Margot was a devoted wife and mother and especially enjoyed being a grandmother to her twin grandchildren, Emily and Sam.
She valued friendship and especially enjoyed summer vacations at the Cape, reconnecting with friends from the early years of her marriage. She maintained long term relationships with her relatives, including cousins as far away as Australia, South Africa, England and Sweden. She was able to make new friends while at Waterstone at the Circle, enjoying dinner time conversations and walks around the neighborhood during the pandemic.
Margot was a dedicated philanthropist, choosing to anonymously support important causes, including the arts, food insecurity, homelessness and medical research.
She is survived by her husband to whom she was married for 71 years, her son Donald, daughter-in-law Lisa and grandchildren Sam and Emily. She was pre-deceased by her son, Kenneth Bloch, who died in 2014.
