Marie Hermann, formerly of Newton, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 1, 2023. Beloved wife of the late Akiba Hermann. Loving mother of Rafael, Daniel, and Nellie and the late Benjamin Hermann.
Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, Marie earned academic scholarships all the way through her Master’s degree in mathematics from Boston College in 1962. She taught mathematics at Simmons College, Boston College, and the American School in Florence, Italy, and was the first female teacher at Assumption Preparatory School in 1965. She lived abroad for two years in Paris and in Italy, experiences that shaped her lifelong love of culture and travel. Once she became a mother, she devoted her life to raising her children and to being a proactive leader in her community, from heading the PTA to becoming an integral person in the Boston chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She was shaped by a full life of experiences of both sadness and joy. Strong, independent, fierce, sharp, hilarious, loving, she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
