I count as one of the greatest blessings of my life to have been taken into the fold of the Salmon family. I am sure most of you reading this will feel the same. Whether in Lincoln, MA, at the Cape, in NYC for the holidays or at their Brookline, MA home, Walter and Marge, my dearest friend Stephanie, and her sisters Joan and Liz, as well as their extended families, always welcome with open arms.  

Their sense of hospitality challenges the boundaries of the word. There is always a warm bed, plenty of delicious food, lovely soaps and such. Marge taught me how to stock the shelves so that anyone visiting has enough of whatever they want!

We have celebrated the high points and lamented the challenges of life together over the past 35 years.  I looked to Marge as both mentor and friend and will miss her wonderful stories, her interest in knowing what we were up to, her sage advise and her love and support of the arts. Just looking at her picture now makes me feel she is still here with me. Those twinkling eyes and her easy laugh are what I will remember the most. 

Please stock the shelves of the afterlife for us Marge. I am happy to know you'll be there and will have everything sorted in time for our arrival.

Walter, Stephanie, Joan, Elizabeth:   We were so saddened to hear today of Marge's passing.  We always enjoyed our times together at your homes in Lincoln and Brookline, which she graciously hosted.  We will surely miss her. Please accept our deepest condolences in this sad time for your family.  Rick Doppelt and Kristi Mills.

Each of us at Cambridge Family and Children's Service will miss and grieve Marge's passing in our own particular way, but on behalf of all of us, I would like to add these few words of tribute. She was a much beloved Board member. When she was deciding whether to take a position on the CFCS Board, it was clear from that very first encounter that Marge was an extraordinary person. She wanted to make sure that our agency was worthy of her commitment, and conversely, that we needed her expertise. She insisted that she was not going to be a mere figurehead, but wanted to contribute and serve. And serve she did!
She agreed to conduct bi-monthly case reviews with our social workers. Although they were intimidated at first by Marge's great experience, they soon came to value their time with her. She arrived with her lunch in a clear plastic tote trimmed in feathers that a grandchild had given her. She and the staff would sit and discuss their cases over lunch. Her nurturing and non-judgment style gave our young social workers the confidence they needed to serve their clients. They left these sessions smiling, animated by what they learned, ready to test for themselves Marge's recommendations, and looking forward to the next review. We looked forward to when Marge would be able to rejoin the reviews after she recuperated.
When she had finished with these sessions Marge would walk from the conference room to my office to check in on Cambridge Family's executive director, to see how I was doing. She wanted to make sure that I was using the same self-help tactics that I insisted the staff practice. She quizzed me on all aspects of our operations, invariably concluding the conversation by handing me a donation for something she heard the clients or staff needed, insisting that I let her help.
Marge was especially devoted to the young adults in our group homes, particularly those who were aging out of the foster care system with no families. Marge supported their annual trip to the beach, insisting that they get the opportunity to go out for a fancy white-napkin dinner. She also insisted that each child be given an allowance to purchase a souvenir, so that they could have something with which to remember the trip. She was so attuned to how important it was for these children to have as normal an experience as possible. To no one's surprise, these mementos could be found on their dressers years later.
Marge did so many “good works” that it would be next to impossible to share every story. It is perhaps enough to say, we were all enriched and blessed by knowing her. She will be missed terribly and remembered fondly.  Her generosity of spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Rest in Peace Marjorie now you are in a better place and with no pain. I am so glad I met you and your wonderful family. You brought so much happiness to everyone one you meet. I will miss you and lots of love to your family.
