Mitchell G. Selig

Mitchell G. Selig, 90 of Chestnut Hill, MA passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 5, 2021. He was the son of the late Benjamin & Agnes (Hoffman) Selig. A lifelong Bostonian, Mitchell went to Boston English High School and graduated in 1949. He then entered the service and served as a Private in the army where he was stationed in West Germany. After being discharged from the service, he then went on to attend Northeastern University in Boston, where he earned a BS in Accounting. Mitchell then followed in his father’s footsteps and became an accountant where he eventually joined his father’s firm of B.J. Selig & Company where he worked for most of his career before retiring.

Mitchell met Maxine, his beloved wife of 61 years, in October 1959 at a party in Boston and was immediately drawn to her. After a short courtship, they became engaged in March and were married on May 29, 1960. They just celebrated their anniversary last week. He is survived by his wife Maxine (Bronstein) Selig of Chestnut Hill; his three daughters: Deborah (David) Glickman, Susan (Tom) Docherty, Laurie (Bruce) McDonald and his four grandchildren: Allie & Jeremy Glickman and Justin and Matthew McDonald. He also leaves behind his brother Arnold Selig, nephew, Eli (Akiko) Selig and niece Abby (Mark) Hornstein and numerous cousins and other extended family and many close friends.

Mitchell had celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by his family and friends in person and via zoom on Saturday, June 4th, the night before he passed away. His strong Jewish faith and his love of Congregation Mishkan Tefila where he had been in attendance since 1940 helped shape Mitchell into the great man that he was. He will always be remembered by all who knew him for his smile, generous spirit, love of a good deal, passion for the beach and the ocean. He was an avid sports fan and watched his beloved Boston sports teams all the time. He was thrilled that he got to see the Red Sox win it all. He was a frequent visitor to Fenway Park and always spoke about seeing Ted Williams play in his last game with his dad Ben. However, his proudest moments and memories were of his family. He loved to share and discuss their many accomplishments with anyone that would listen.

Mitchell gave back to the community as well. He was a Shriner, a Mason, participated in the Jewish War Veterans program and he was a volunteer at the Veteran’s Hospital in West Roxbury and at the Newton Wellesley Hospital.

Mitchell lived his life the way he always wanted. He loved being surrounded by friends and family and loved helping people. Whether that was finding people a good deal on a car or a free car wash - it brought him great joy.

Services will be held at Congregation Mishkan Tefila, 384 Harvard St, Brookline, on Monday, June 7th at 2:00pm. The service will also be broadcast via zoom at www.tinyurl.com/MitchellSelig

Burial will be private.
