Phyllis Smith Berkowitz of Marblehead died peacefully on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Phyllis loved making connections. She cherished her lifelong friends and the new friendships she made along the way. She travelled five continents, read The New Yorker, completed crossword puzzles in pen and repaid her love of the arts as a docent. She joyfully spent her summers sailing the waters of Marblehead as first mate to her late husband of 61 years, Sidney – the only time she wasn’t in command. After raising three children, Phyllis earned her Masters of Social Work from Simmons College, leading to a fulfilling career and the respect of her colleagues and clients. Phyllis leaves behind her beloved children Laura and Steven Kurzrok of Marblehead, William Berkowitz of Scottsdale, Ariz., Gene Berkowitz and Karen Pelto of Sudbury; adored grandchildren Andrew, Margie, Jennifer, Danielle and Evan; and her sister, Shelah Fried of New York City.
