
Rene (Szafir) Mandel, age 61, of Philadelphia, formerly of Framingham, and New York City, on Saturday, October 15, 2011. For 39 years beloved wife of Dr. Mark A. Mandel. Loving mother of Susannah and Jeremy and foster mother of Andrew Wray. Adored sister-in-law of Wendy Sue. Fond aunt of Roger Morehouse. Loving cousin of Ira Finkelstein, Miriam Strassberg, Eliot Gorlin, Amira Dvorah, and Lisa Gorlin.
After majoring in Classics at CCNY, Rene earned a Master's degree in Library Service from Columbia and one in English Literature from Berkeley. For most of her career she was a librarian at town and college libraries, with special interests in reference, children's, and young adult librarianship. In Framingham, she and her husband raised their family, Rene was a longtime member of the elected Town Meeting and a devoted and effective supporter of public education. She was a voracious and discriminating reader and an enthusiastic solver of only the most challenging of the NY Times' crossword puzzles. She was a passionate, informed doll collector and enjoyed hand-sewing fabulous, intricate clothing lines for them as well as being actively involved in doll conventions and local clubs.
Services were held at Congregation Beth El of the Sudbury River Valley, 105 Hudson Road, Sudbury on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 1:00 pm. Burial at Beit Olam Cemetery, 61 Old Sudbury Road, Wayland. Following burial, memorial observance will be at the home of Joyce Tolman until 9:00 pm with a service at 7:30 pm, and Monday, 4-9 pm. Congregation Kol Tzedek of West Philadelphia will hold a memorial service for Rene on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 4:00 pm at International House Philadelphia, 3701 Chestnut Street on the second floor, in the South America room with a reception to follow. After the reception there will be a break. At 7:00 pm all are welcome at 4237 Regent Square for Shivah with Minyan at 7:30 pm. There may be an additional night of Shivah on Thursday.
