Richard was born in Stoneham, MA to Henry and Leah (Mascott) Gibbs. He spent his childhood years in Saugus, MA while traveling to Miami frequently. After the family moved to Swampscott, Richard attended high school at Brown and Nichols (BB&N). He went on to Colby College, where he and his fraternity brothers were a forerunner to “Animal House”. Subsequently, Richard received his law degree from New England School of Law and then joined the family business, Gibbs Oil Company. Following that, Richard founded and/or partnered in petroleum/oil & gas companies: Astroline Petroleum Corporation, Texport, Inc., Harbor Fuel Corporation, Enertrac, Inc., and Telsen 21.
Richard was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Joel (Carolyn) Gibbs and his beloved son, Derek R. Gibbs. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Yvonne (Delhorne) Gibbs and brother, Randall (Gail) Gibbs, his nephews and nieces, Johnathan, Andrew, Elizabeth, Allison, Cameron, and Ainsley and his two ever-faithful Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Remington and Pretzel.
Upon meeting and marrying his wife, Yvonne, she enticed him to visit Nantucket where the two of them along with Richard’s son, Derek, immediately fell in love with the island and set up a home where they spent extended time over the next three decades. While not on Nantucket, Richard and Yvonne loved to travel, influenced by Richard’s appreciation for fine wines and food (ethnic street or 3-star Michelin). He excelled at sports including golf, baseball and skiing. He was also an avid fan and season ticket holder to all the major Boston teams. Although he was a dedicated sports enthusiast, he also had a passion for the symphony, ballet and theater, while always seeking out a good comedic performance.
Richard’s intellectual curiosity, sensitive soul and quirky wit enlivened his attraction to all – young and old.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 1 at 11:00am at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline. Interment to follow at Newton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
