

Rose (Kosofsky) Hurwitz (z”l) daughter of Celia(z”l) and Charles(z”l) Kosofsky, passed away on December 25th. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Joshua Hurwitz. Rose was a devoted mother of Joel Hurwitz, Debbie Sussman & her husband Joel, Ruth Ehrlich & her husband Barry and Charles Hurwitz & his wife Hava. She was the cherished grandmother of Ari & Jessica, Jonathan & Sarah, Mera & Adam, Daniel, Nathan & Shula, Jordan, David & Carly, Ilan, Yael & Gil and Noga and loving great grandmother of Max, Eli, Julie, Eva, Hannah and Levi. In addition she was the dear sister of Leon Kosofsky and the late Sidney Kosofsky, the late Sarah Levitt, the late Elvin Kose and sister-in-law of Israel Hurwitz. She was also the fond aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Rose was born in NYC, raised in Newark, NJ and attended Jersey City State Teachers College and was an elementary school teacher and years later she was a reading specialist. At age 21 she married Josh whom she met at Camp Tevya. She was a stay at home mother, and when her children were independent she went back to school, got a masters in reading and went back to work.
Her life entered a new phase when her grandchildren started to come along. She enjoyed helping out with them regularly and was very involved in their lives and beloved by them all. She loved anything having to do with words. She loved reading, crossword puzzles, playing scrabble, which she was exceptionally good at and writing.
Judaism was a central part of her life and she passed on Jewish traditions to all her children and grandchildren. Her home was the gathering of the family on all holidays and she attended shul regularly being a member of Temple Emanuel for almost 60 years.
After she retired she volunteered her time at the Newton Public Library teaching ESL, at the Senior Centre in Newton, Camp Yavneh, and Voting polls.She always tried to help people out when she gave generously to many charities. Beloved by all that knew her she will be missed sorely.
Services at Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward St., Newton on Thursday, December 27th
at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St. Sharon.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to: CJP: Jewish learning and Engagement or Jewish camping Funds or The Newton Free Library.
Shiva will be at the home of Debbie and Joel Sussman, on Thursday 6-9 pm Minyan at 7:00pm.
