Vic.I was saddened to learn of Ruth's passing.You had a wonderful life together and my heart goes out to you and you r family. I still remember the first time I attended an APHA annual meeting.You and Ruth made me welcome and included me in the group of like minded activists who got together at the annual APHA meetings.We continued to do so for many years. Jerry and I are so sad to lose our friend Ruth Sidel. We send our condolences to Vic, to Mark, Kevin, and their families, to Ruth's friends, colleagues, and students, and to all those whose lives she enriched through her important work. Because of her life and her work, this world is a better place.

I would like to share my first memory of Ruth Sidel. I was an overworked, fledgling CUNY faculty member. I met Ruth at a social occasion and after we exchanged a few words, she spontaneously declared "I will be your mentor!" She then shared some very sound advice (which I hadn't thought of before and which I followed.) 
In that small, spontaneous interaction, I saw her generosity, her commitment to identify with those less empowered, and her fearless spirit. 

Each time that Jerry and I met with Ruth and Vic over the past few years, we were struck by the devotion and caring that she and Vic shared as well as Ruth's pride in her children and grandchildren. Such a privilege to know her, yet such a loss.

Hers was an amazing life force and her generosity is an example to all of us.

We have lost an extraordinary person, intellect, writer, mother, and life-long partner to Vic.  Ruth and Vic were always generous with their ideas, their research, their time, their compassion, and their kindness.  Ruth taught me so much about family policy that my own family medicine and family therapy training had not.  Ruth and Vic were the ultimate power couple with powerful ideas and broad expertise that complemented each other so well.  We have lost an intellectual beacon and a wonderful human being.  We mourn at a distance with Vic, Mark, and Kevin and the many, many others who loved and admired Ruth and are indebted to her for what she taught us about families and what she and Vic taught us about marriage.

My deepest condolences to the family. Ruth was one of the first persons I met as a young professional through APHA, and she was a never ending source of inspiration. She will be greatly missed by all public health activists.

Ruth was a deeply respected colleague and good friend. I and many others in public health and social medicine learned from her on many occasions  about China, the policy challenges affecting women and child, social welfare policy and welfare rights, gender and health, militarism and peace, and other critically important issues. She provided a wonderful model as a courageous activist, a superb and enthusiastic teacher, and a supportive and nurturant human being. I feel very fortunate and grateful to have known Ruth and will continue to benefit from her presence on the planet. As we say with our Latin American colleagues: Ruth Sidel, presente!

My deepest condolences to the Sidel Family.  I worked with Professor Sidel for 20 years in the Department of Sociology at Hunter College.  She was a very kind and caring person.  My heart is broken and I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a remarkable woman. I am blessed to have known her. I will miss her very much.

I will never forget RUTH SIDEL. She was my professor at Hunter College, and she had a lasting influence on my life. Coming from France, I was new to the american education and still struggling with the language. In her own generous way Ruth gave me the support, the confidence and the direction I needed to start a new career in this country. Sandra and I were realy saddened to read in the Sunday Times of Ruth's passing. I had just spent a delightful hour with her about 10 days ago and could not be more shocked to read about Ruth, She was such a vibrant, brilliant and articulate person. We will greatly miss her presence

I am very sad to hear of Ruth's death.  She was deeply committed to making the world a better place and her death is a loss for all of us.

I will always remember my first meeting with Ruth, and being touched, moved, and inspired to act by Ruth's publications on Women & Childcare in China; Unsung Heroines; and Keeping Women and Children Last. A wonderful and caring person, Ruth leaves an amazing legacy to be remembered, and acted upon.  My family's thoughts are with Vic and her family.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Ruth's death today.  She was a teacher, scholar, author but most of all a devoted wife and mother.  Just seeing her with Victor was joyous for both Jim and I.

She visited me last year with Vic at my home in Hull.  When I told Ruth were moving there she was so happy about sharing her memories of summers in Hull.
