Rabbi Chiel was a  tremendous influence in my life.I was raised in Malverne  where he was both my rabbi and friend I can remember, as if yesterday, sitting in the Malverne Jewish Center glued to every word of his inspiring sermons. He is totally responsible for me being the observant Jew that I am today. I truly looked up to, and admired  Rabbi more than anyone else in my life. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Chiel and the entire Chiel family. I am very sad to hear of his passing. I pray that his memory will always serve as a blessing.

To Rabbi Chiel's family--thoughts and prayers to all of you on the loss of this wonderful man.  He officiated at my Bar Mitzvah at Malverne Jewish Center in 1963 and offered invaluable support and affection to my mother and me when my Dad passed away, four years later.  His gentleness, as well as, his passionate challenging sermons made quite an impression on me as a teenager.  His was, a life well lived.....peace...

I remember Rabbi Chiel's generosity.  He officiated at the wedding of my parents.  All my condolences.

Rabbi Chiel was the spiritual leader of CJP when I worked there for many years, and his impact was enormous, both in his formal role as a teacher in the Genesis lunchtime learning program and in his daily interactions with staff and the CJP community. He shared his compassion and intellect in every conversation and was a terrific role model for our community.  Many will forever be inspired by Rabbi Chiel. My sincere condolences to your family.

Felice and I are in Amsterdam and just learned the news of Sam's passing. We are deeply saddened; Sam was a revered colleague, a cherished teacher and a beloved friend. He is an irreplaceable presence in our lives.
If we were not so many thousands of miles away we would be with you in person but we can be there to say farewell to him and to hug you only in spirit. You are in our thoughts and we will plan to see you soon after our return.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Rabbi Chiel.  I remember when he came to Temple Emanuel, the friendship with my Dad, and his generous spirit, heart and soul.   He presence will truly be missed ---he had a warmth and kindness and a very strong presence throughout the Greater Boston area ---he touched all.   My thoughts are with you all at this time.

Rabbi Chiel officiated at the wedding of my husband  and me 32 years ago.We subsequently moved to NY but remember his  wise advise which we refer to to this day. May his memory be a blessing to all.

This is such a great loss for Boston's Jewish community.  Rabbi Chiel's passion for Jewish life coupled with his engaging approach to Jewish engagement made him a unique Jewish leader in a city filled with luminaries in Jewish life.  May his memory truly be a blessing.
