Shirley B. (Cohen) Sloane, of Cambridge, Belmont and Watertown passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at the age of 100.
For fifty wonderful years, Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Morris J. Sloane. She was the devoted and loving mother of Susan I. Sloane of Marshfield, Marsha L. Sloane of Rockport, Joseph and Mary Sloane of Belmont and stepmother of Gail Burke of Orinda, CA. Shirley was the adored grandmother of Emily and Ben Cote, Marissa and Genia Lomas, Mollie and Caitlyn Sloane, Rachel and Kent Perkocha and Gabriel and Kara Burke, and the loving great-grandmother of Brooke, Alex and Charlotte Cote and Morris and Felix Lomas. Shirley was the sister of the late Stan Cohen and a dear friend of Mayra Cruz.
Shirley was born on August 10, 1924 and grew up in Cambridge. After attending Bryant and Stratton Business College, she was hired as a bookkeeper at Kendall Confectionery Company in Cambridge where she met her future husband, Morris. They eventually bought the business from Morris’s brother, Nate. Shirley was an integral part of Kendall Confectionery, working there until her early 90’s.
The Sloanes moved to Belmont in 1953 and raised their family there. They spent summers in Rockport for over twenty-five years and Shirley continued to spend vacation time there in her 80’s and 90’s, staying at The Atlantis Oceanfront Inn in Gloucester where, together with the Inn’s staff and her family, made many wonderful memories.
Shirley was known for her quick wit, sense of humor and extreme generosity. She was a fabulous dancer, an avid reader, a fierce Scrabble player, a movie buff, a Red Sox fan, and she was also quite talented at the roulette wheel. Under her high school yearbook picture it said,” Pretty, popular, full of fun, Shirley is loved by everyone.” This remained true throughout her entire life. Above all, Shirley was a truly amazing mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
The family would like to thank the staff at Belmont Manor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for taking such wonderful care of Shirley during the last phase of her life.
