Born on June 23, 1934, in Vilna, Poland, Sidney’s childhood during the Holocaust was marked by unimaginable hardship and remarkable resilience. He survived the Vilna Ghetto and the HKP forced labor camp alongside his mother, Sonia Widoff. After the war, Sidney and his mother went to the Zeilsheim Displaced Persons Camp near Frankfurt, Germany, before immigrating to the United States in 1950, where they began a new life in Boston.
Sidney went on to graduate from Boston University in 1958 and soon began his career in real estate, laying the foundation for a lifetime of professional accomplishment. In 1964, Sidney was introduced to the love of his life, Claire. They married one year later, and earlier this year, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Throughout his lifetime, Sidney demonstrated unwavering devotion to the Jewish people, the State of Israel, and Holocaust remembrance. He was a proud member of AIPAC, Temple Emanuel of Newton, the B’nai B’rith Realty Lodge, and an active participant in numerous March of the Living trips, where he bore witness and educated younger generations about the Shoah. To his family, friends, and community, he embodied strength, dignity, and perseverance.
Sidney is survived by his wife, Claire; his son, Steven and Wendy Handler; Laurie Zendejas and her late husband, Thomas (z’’l), and five grandchildren.
