Sumner was my buddy in our teen years when I lived on Gibbs St. and he on Naples Rd. We had a special and affectionate friendship which centered on baseball.  We both batted left handed, and each of us thought we could hit the ball further than the other. Truth to tell, I think he could. Sumner was even tempered, had a nice laugh, and was easy to like. He visited me later when he sold insurance. Would  I say no to my pal, Sumner? No I would not. I get a bill now every few months. I just turned 91, so I have a while to go to reach Sumner. Although our halcyon days of youth were three-quarters of a century ago, Sumner’s face is clear in my mind, while some other faces have became me clouded by the passage of time. That says something good about Sumner Sturman!

Sumner was my cousin, one of many. He was 13 years older than me, and so we didn't grow up together. But I do remember him very well, going back even to his late teen years. Those earliest memories are of an active and outgoing young man, a devoted Boston Braves baseball fan with an easygoing disposition and a great many friends. 

What will stay with me always were the traits that marked his character and personality. Sumner was unfailingly cheerful and encouraging. He never had a disagreeable word and seemed always to see the best side of people and the happy side of life.  He was the kind of person whom others wanted to be around. I can't think of a greater legacy for anyone.

Rest in peace, Cousin Shimmy. And love always.

Remembering Sumner who was a beloved friend to  the Weiner and Juman families. May his memory be a blessing to his devoted family and loving wife, Joan. My late mother Henny adored Sumner and always spoke of his wisdom and comforting words of kindness and support through their many years of friendship.

My fondest memories of Cousin Sumner (*Shimmy) always centered on his loving kindness for the family and interest in what was happening in our lives! He had a terrific sense of humor and loved telling as much as hearing jokes and stories. 

Sylvia, my sister, a year younger than Sumner, told many funny stories about growing up with Sumner. During that time, they were very close and the love for one another endured through the years. Truly, he was one of a kind with the emphasis on "kind!"
