Vitaly Goldin, age 85, of Newton, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. He grew up in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Russia, as the younger of two children of Profs. Yefim (Haim) Goldin and Anne Goldin (née Hochberg). Vitaly was preceded in death by his wife, Nataly Goldin (née Klupt), with whom he had shared 62 years of a devoted and loving marriage. He is survived by his two daughters, Dina and Larisa, and two grandsons, Isaac and Ethan.
Vitaly obtained M.S. in Mathematics from the prestigious Leningrad State University, where he was recognized for his brilliance in mathematics, and for his victories in local and national mathematics competitions. Nataly was his classmate, and they got married half a year after graduation, in February 1963. A passionate mathematician, he worked at a research institute in Leningrad before relocating to the U.S. with his family in 1977. In America, he became a software engineer, most recently at SolidWorks in Waltham, where he worked for 25 years until his retirement in February 2020 at age 80.
Vitaly and Nataly traveled frequently — especially to the Caribbean and Europe — and enjoyed cruises that brought them to new places and cultures. At home in Newton, as well as at their 2nd residence on Cape Cod, Vitaly found joy in solving crossword and sudoku puzzles, watching Jeopardy!, rooting for the Celtics, going swimming and walking, and the company of many friends whom he and Nataly had accumulated over the years.
When Nataly became ill in late 2024, Vitaly was constantly by her side, caring for her with patience and devotion. He was devastated by her passing on March 31, 2025. He did his best to honor her wish that he live a long and happy life, struggling to imagine life without her, but he died of a broken heart two weeks later.
