Judge Gloria Cohen Aronin, age 93, passed away after a long illness at her home in Brooklyn, New York, with her son by her side. She is predeceased by her beloved husband and partner, Judge Irving S. Aronin. She is survived by her children, Douglas (Lisa z”l); Heidi and Scott; her grandchildren Rabbi Noah Aronin (Tovah), Chava, and Jake; her great-grandchildren Yaakov and Eli. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, New York, she attended Brooklyn College and graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1950, one of five women in the graduating class. She was a distinguished lawyer and jurist, working as a partner in the firm Aronin, Cohen & Aronin with her husband Irving and her brother Sidney Cohen, later ascending to the bench, serving respectively as judge of the Civil Court, Court of Claims, New York State Supreme Court, and Appellate Term, all in Kings County. Her distinguished career in the law lasted more than 60 years. A community and political activist, she served at various times as President of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association; President of the Bergen Beach Civic Association; head of the Supreme Court Justices’ Association; member of the Board of Trustees of Temple Sholom of Flatbush; member of the local community planning board. She did the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink, played a mean game of Scrabble, was always curious to learn new things, and above all loved spending time with her family. Her idea of a perfect vacation was to celebrate Passover week with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at a beautiful resort. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
