Guadalupe Zurita, affectionately known as Mami Lupe by her family and friends, died after a long-fought battle with breast cancer on Monday, October 2, 2017 at her home in Griffith, Indiana. Lupe joined her heavenly father surrounded by her family. Up until the end, she kept a smile on her face and tried to bring comfort to those around her. Lupe was born on May 21, 1938 in Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas, Mexico. She eloped and married the love of her life, Santos Zurita, on August 1, 1960 and they began their life together in Brownsville, Texas. They moved to Indiana in 1987 where they remained until her death. They raised their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with love and affection. She had a heart of gold and gave all she had to those around her. She made friends wherever she went and she was loved by everyone. She was a comedienne in her own right, always ready to tell a joke or play a prank on someone. She loved to cook and one of her pleasures was making the hottest hot sauce she could and testing it on those who dared to try it. She was a wonderful cook who could make anything taste good. She loved to garden and was very proud of her green thumb. Above all, she was the head of her family and the glue that held everyone together. We will remember her all the days of our lives and honor her memory.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Santos Zurita and their children, Josie Villarreal, Sandra (Jon) Minker, Minnie (Jose) Negron, Delia (Rich) Quast and Santos Zurita, II. Her siblings: Benjamin Ortiz, Jose Luis (Rebecca) Madrigal, Elvira (Macario) Salinas, and Alfonso Martinez. Her grandchildren: Celina (TJ Beach) Villarreal, Luis (Rosie) Villarreal, Cristal Villarreal, Sherri (Francisco) Mendez, Douglas (Stephanie) Conrad Jr., Megan Conrad, Laila Negron, Mary Negron, Anastasia Negron, Yuri (Steven) Rodriguez, Lissa Gabriel, and Nolan Quast. Her great-grandchildren: Alyssa Johnson, Cheyenne Beach, Mateo Villarreal, Miguel Villarreal, Isabelle Mendez, Marilyn Mendez and Mackenzie Rodriguez.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Julia Martinez and her brothers: Servando Madrigal and Ricardo Martinez. “She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails.” Elizabeth Edwards.
Visitation will be held at Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista from 11 am to 9 pm with a rosary scheduled at 7 pm on Friday, October 6. A funeral service will be held at the same location at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 7.
