Herminia is an alumnus of Brownsville High School Class of 1965. She attended Texas Southmost College and received an Associate Degree in Education.
On November 16, 1968, she married the “love of her life” and high-school sweetheart Edelmiro Hernandez Jr. They lived devoted to each other and their three children; moreover, created a loving home where family, friends and neighbors were welcomed and loved.
She dedicated her life to service of her church and community. She assisted Eddie as Den Mother for Our Lady of Guadalupe Boy Scout Troop (1980’s). She was a member of the St. Luke’s Catholic Church Choir (30 years), volunteered as a C.C.D teacher, assisted in the Marriage Encounter Ministry, was a Eucharistic Minister, and was a member of the Loving Outreach Ministry.
She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Daughters of America, the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 43.
She retired from the Brownsville Housing Authority, where she worked as the Procurement Director for 27 dedicated years.
In her retirement, she enjoyed attending church functions and her seasonal luncheons with her St. Luke’s Catholic Church friends. She treasured her frequent Luby's lunches and “meriendas” with her sister Amparo, Sylvia Isabel Saenz, a life-long friend, cousin Lali Ramirez and sister-in-law, Socorro Hernandez Garibay. Her hobbies were sewing, ceramics, acrylic painting, Loteria, cross-word puzzles and word search puzzles. She enjoyed her quiet time listening to the music of Eric Clapton and watching cooking shows and Yard Makeover reels on Youtube. She found great pleasure and peace listening to Mother Angelica on EWTN, praying the Holy Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Her faith and devotion to Our Father God, Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and her Catholic faith was first and foremost in her life, and she shared this incredible faith with her children.
