Mervin Mosbacker, was born August 15th, 1926 in Batavia Ohio. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and when the war ended went on to attend and graduate from Wilmington College with a degree in business. It was there that he met his beloved wife Raquel Martinez de Armas. A few years later they settled their young family in Brownsville, and made it their home for the rest of their lives. He was a devoted husband and father, and an adoring grandfather. Mervyn lived a life of service, devoting himself to helping those in need and fighting injustice in every form. He was outspoken and direct. You didn’t need to guess where he stood on important issues, and he always backed up his beliefs with action. As his children say, ‘he led by example’. He and his wife Raquel spearheaded the missions program at The First United Methodist Church for many years, helped build a rural school in an impoverished neighborhood in Matamoros, and served on the board on The Good Neighbor Settlement House. He served as Democratic Precinct Chair, and was elected a trustee for Texas Southmost College. During his tenure, he and his fellow trustees were instrumental in forging a relationship with the University of Texas System which resulted in the creation of The University of Texas at Brownsville. He ran his businesses with the same compassion and integrity that he demonstrated in his personal life, modeling those values for his children and grandchildren. His contributions will long be remembered in our community.
