Doña Reyes, as she was known by close friends of her family was born on the Three Kings Day January 6, 1922 at Rancho El Gomeño, Municipio de Matamoros, Tamaulipas, México, to Don Victoriano Alanis Lopez & Doña Catarina Garza Fernandez, pioneering families of H. Matamoros, Tamaulipas, and Brownsville, TX. She was the fifth of nine children and she grew up with her eight siblings, Maria Luisa (Manuel) Treviño, Catarina (Jesus) López, Domingo (Maria de la Luz S.) Alanis, Concepcion (Juan Jose) Hinojosa, Sara (Melquiades) Sosa, Juan (Josefa G.) Alanis, Alfonso (Lidia P.) Alanis and Raquel (Reynaldo) Lopez in Rancho El Ranchito. She was the last surviving member of the Alanis Garza dynasty.
On December 10, 1944, she married the love of her life, Samuel Treviño Vidal, with whom she shared 40 years of happy matrimony and they were the blessed parents of Omar, Horacio, Rolando, Samuel Jr., Irma and Mary. Mrs. Treviño was a Brownsville resident for the past 48 years and was a devout catholic and parishioner of Saint Luke’s Catholic Church. In 1995, she became a US Citizen and since then she voted in local and federal elections.
In May 2012, she was honored as a Brownsville resident on occasion of her 90th birthday.
On her 100th birthday, January 6, 2022, her extraordinary life was celebrated by local media outlets, which featured her photo and a short biography. Just two months later, she received a letter from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, a leading institution in biomedical sciences and clinical investigation. The doctors expressed interest in studying her eating habits as part of their research into longevity.
On February 10, 2025, she was honored with a City of Brownsville proclamation presented by City Commissioner Roy De los Santos.
As a family, we find solace in knowing that as she took her last breath, she was met by a grand celebration in heaven by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by her dear parents, Don Victoriano and Doña Catarina Alanis, her husband Samuel Trevino Sr., her eight siblings, her three sons Omar, Horacio and Rolando Trevino Alanis, her son in law Carlos Garza, daughter in law Irma R. Trevino, grandsons, Manuel Trevino and Christopher Garcia, who preceded her in death.
Left to mourn her death and forever cherish her memory are her three surviving children: Samuel (Clarita) Treviño, from Houston, Irma Treviño Alanis, and Mary (Alfredo) de la Fuente from Brownsville, and her three daughters in law: Lupita Trevino and Sally Trevino from Brownsville, and Sarita Trevino from Chicago Heights, IL, her 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one on the way and eight great-great grandchildren. She was also a beloved aunt, cousin and loyal friend to many.
In the 1970s she was one of the caregivers for her father-in-law, and again in the 1980s with her unwavering devotion, she helped care for her mother in Mexico. Her compassion touched countless lives.
Everyone was welcomed in her house and there was always delicious food at the table to share.
Proverbs 31:10 “A good woman is hard to find and worth far more than diamonds.”
“Mamá, we thank you for giving us the more important gifts: life, our Catholic faith, education, respect to others, honesty, loyalty and the sense of charity that YOU taught us. Mamá, without doubt, your legacy will continue for future generations since you were our very much beloved matriarch. Mamá, we know that now that you are resting in the celestial paradise, along with your loved ones and enjoying that spiritual peace with Jesus Christ. Mamá, you will be very much missed and remembered always, but especially whenever, we see the garden blooming with your favorite roses, at Sunday mass and also on January 6 when we will get together to eat la Rosca de Reyes in your memory.”
Vigil will be held on December 9, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Saint Lukes Catholic Church with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00pm by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA) Court Saint Luke 2749.
