William Hewitt Good (“Bill”), 72, passed away in Brownsville, TX on March 24th, 2021. Bill was born in New Haven, CT on June 11th, 1948, the only son and younger child of the late Donald K. and Mary Hewitt Good of Essex, CT.
Bill was preceded in death by his two daughters, Mercy and Deborah Good.
He is survived by his sister, Bethany Good, and brother-in-law, Wilbur Mead, of Arlington, VA; nephews Lester Gutierrez of Arlington, VA and Christopher Gutierrez of Portland, OR; stepdaughters Charity Bonner Milam of Plano, TX and Leah Bonner-Newberry of Deltona, FL, and several cousins. Bill was a loving and loved member of the extended Good, Hewitt, Mead and Gutierrez families.
Bill grew up in Essex, CT, was educated in New England and New York, and served in the U.S. Navy. His childhood loves were boating on the Connecticut River with friends and hiking in the Green and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire with family and friends.
Bill lived in Brownsville since 1991, where he was active in many civic and charitable causes. After retiring, he fulfilled his dream of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, which he accomplished in 1996. (In fact, his trail name, “Mud Elephant”, is the primary name many of his friends call him.) After his through-hike, he spent the next twenty summers in New England, hiking in the Green Mountains and doing volunteer maintenance on the Vermont Long Trail.
A memorial service is being planned in Brownsville later this Spring.
Per his wishes, in the Fall there will be memorials by the shore of the Connecticut River, and at the family plot in Essex.
Memorial donations may be made to the Green Mountain Club (greenmountainclub.org\donate).
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.dignitymemorial.com/legacy for the Good family.
