Cora Lee Westmoreland, 98, of Bryan, passed away Friday, August 24, 2012, in Houston, with her family by her side. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 27, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Plainview Cemetery in Normangee.
Cora was born in Leon County on October 30, 1913. As the youngest of seven children born to S.N. and Josephine Hawkins, Cora was born into a loving, but hard working, farming family.
Married to P.A. “Anderson” Westmoreland on September 6, 1930 in Normangee, they had three children; Charles, Janell, and Rose Ann. The family moved to Bryan shortly after the war ended in 1945 so that Anderson could start working at Texas A&M
University.
After the children were born, Cora earned her nursing license and worked for over forty years as a nurse at both of the local hospitals and then moved into private duty nursing. After retiring, her primary interest and passion was her family. Her family knew anytime anyone was in need she was always the first there to help. She is well known for her wonderful southern cooking and especially for making the best pies.
Cora was a lifelong member of the Primitive Baptist Church and regularly attended until age and health wouldn’t allow.
She is survived by her 3 children; Charles Westmoreland, Janell Hines, and Rose Ann Heine and husband Fred; 6 grandchildren, Pam Johnson, Janet Smith and husband Dale, Keith Heine, Clifton Hager, Kevin Heine, and Kyle Heine and wife Bridgette; and 10 great-grandchildren.
