Mary Ann was born in the small community of Wiedeville, near Brenham in Washington County. Her parents were Gus Adolph & Lena Schultz Wiede. When Mary Ann was a child, the family had fallen into challenging times and decided to give one child up for adoption. A wonderful childless couple, the Trussells, selected Mary Ann to love as their own. Mary Ann graduated from high school in Jacksonville, Florida. Eventually she would end up in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she met a sailor from Bryan, stationed at the Naval Air Station, named Lowell Holligan. They would go on to celebrate 69 years together as husband and wife. Mary Ann’s sister, Doris, wanted to find her “lost” sister and began searching and Mary Ann was reunited with her birth family and was able to spend many years with her siblings.
She worked for many years at First State Bank & Trust/First Bank & Trust, in the bookkeeping department and later in wire transfers before she retired. She also volunteered for the H.O.S.T. reading program for BISD, helping children learn to improve their reading.
Mary Ann will always be remembered for her unselfish love and devotion to her family. Whether that meant taking care of a special needs son who died at 5 years, faithfully taking care of a husband in his last years or nursing a son through four hip surgeries. She was the true definition of a wife and mother. The most important legacy she leaves behind is her faithfulness in serving her Lord and Savior. She was a longtime member of Central Baptist (Central) and for nearly 50 years, with her “adopted” sister, Carolyn Browning, she taught fourth grade Sunday school, impacting several generations of the same families. She also worked in Vacation Bible School and Easter Pageants.
Mary Ann was preceded in death, by her parents and adoptive parents; her husband, Lowell; her son Johnny; her brothers, Edward & Gus (infants), Howard and Eugene; her sister, Doris.
Mary Ann is survived by her son, David; her sister-in-law, Judy Holligan; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews.
In honor of her service to the children’s ministry, memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Building Fund at Central 1991 FM 158, College Station, Texas 77845 www.centralbcs.org
