

Mary served as a Deputy Constable in Surfside, Texas, prior to obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Stephen F. Austin State University, located in Nacogdoches. She held various positions within multiple legal offices in Tyler, Texas, including her role as a paralegal at the United States Attorney’s Office. In 2010, Mary medically retired from her position as a jury coordinator at the Smith County Courthouse.
She was a dedicated member of the Order of Eastern Star for fifty years, during which she occupied numerous positions, including Worthy Matron in various chapters throughout her life. Additionally, she contributed to the Texas Grand Chapter. Mary was also passionate about the performing arts, serving as both an actress and stage manager for numerous productions with the Brazosport Musical Theater. Moreover, she possessed a profound affection for animals, particularly dogs, and lovingly cared for many throughout her lifetime.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, Talmadge Curtis Brunson and Dorothy Brunson of Troup.
She is survived by her sons, Jay Curtis Wellman and Jennifer of Somerville, and John David Wellman and Jennifer of Bryan; her grandsons, John Daniel and Joshua Luke, both of Bryan; as well as her siblings, Diane Brunson Lackey and Ginny Brunson, both of Bertram, and Dennis and Mary Beth Brunson of Bryan.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Patriot Paws, the Order of the Eastern Star, or a preferred local charity.
A funeral service for Mary will be held Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 2:30 PM at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Following the funeral service will be a burial at Bryan City Cemetery.
