Nick was born October 22, 1926 to John George Sr. and Mary Frances Stovall Lutz in San Antonio. Before completing his formal education as a 1948 graduate of Southern Methodist University, Nick graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following their marriage, he and Joan made their home in Calvert where he was a farmer and rancher. Nick loved to play golf and spent countless hours on courses across Texas and beyond with his family and friends. He loved spending time with his family and always said that his wish was for all his children and grandchildren to be with him and Joan all the time. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren. He was their greatest supporter in all of their endeavors and never tired of the endless road trips to golf tournaments, football and baseball games, horse shows, dance recitals and birthday parties. They all learned to drive, fish, hunt, golf and swim while spending time with Big Nick. His memory will live on as these stories are passed on to his great-grandchildren. Nick was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Deloris and Regina; and his brother, John. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Joan Sommer Fagan Lutz of Bryan; sons, Nickolas Robert Lutz Jr. and wife, Mona, of Rockport, and John Carl Lutz Sr. and wife, Mary, of Calvert; daughter, Mary Kathryn Lutz Sustaire and husband, Don, of College Station; grandchildren, Nickolas Robert Lutz III and wife, Gretchen, Trevor Sommer Lutz and wife, Amber, Melissa Lutz Kirk and husband, Shane, John Carl Lutz, Jr., Christopher Alan Lutz and Don Russel Sustaire; great-grandchildren, Haley Sommer and Hayden Nickolas Lutz, Presley Sommer and Landon Cole Lutz, Kyla Jane and Kinley Elizabeth Kirk; sister, Carolyn Ann Uvietta; and brothers, Gerald, Charles, Jack and Henry; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
