On Monday, January 29, 2024, the world lost a beacon of love and warmth with the passing of Sara Scarmardo Fazzino at the age of 84. Sara, a beloved daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.
Born in Caldwell, Texas to Will and Rosalie Scarmardo, Sara's early years were shaped by the values of faith and family. These principles became the foundation of her life, guiding her through each chapter with grace and unwavering love.
Sara's love story began on November 21,1954, when she married the love of her life, Lee J. Fazzino. Together, they embraced a life of adventure and promise, blessed by the arrival of five beautiful children who filled Sara's days with joy. Her dedication to family transformed their home into a place of love, where good food and prayer were the cornerstones of a life well-lived.
A pillar of faith, Sara devoted a lifetime to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, where she was a devoted member of the St. Anthony’s Altar Society for 64 years, making her a Lifetime Member. For 6 years, she shared her wisdom as a teacher in the church’s Mother’s Day Out program. Sara actively participated in the annual St. Isidore Feast Day which included the blessing of the crops, and contributed significantly to the St. Anthony’s Spaghetti Dinner and the St. Anthony’s Bazaar, and Live Auction. Her commitment to these events showcased her passion for bringing people together in the spirit of community.
Beyond her church community, Sara was the heart of her close-knit circle of friends, especially in her beloved Bridge and Book Clubs. The laughter and joy shared in these gatherings were a testament to the deep connections she forged. Sara cherished these friendships, considering them an extension of her own family, and she found solace and joy in their shared moments.
Sara had a way with words and her birthday cards were nothing short of lyrical. She was always prepared and never late for any birthday. Her cards would make you not only feel loved, but give you the feeling that she was wrapping you in a warm embrace.
In her kitchen, Sara not only created delicious meals but cherished memories with her family. The aroma of her cooking was a symphony of love and laughter, where recipes were not just about ingredients but stories passed down through generations. Sara's culinary ability was more than just skill; it was an art form that spoke of tradition and the importance of everyone gathering together around the table. She instilled in her children and grandchildren the understanding that food is a gift, a tangible expression of love, and a time to be one together. Every dish she prepared was a gesture of profound affection and thankfulness.
Sara's kindness knew no bounds; her warm smile and sweet words had the power to brighten even the darkest days. In her presence, sorrows were lifted, and hearts were warmed. “ A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still she will cling to us and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” Washington Irving
