

Christine Jackson Fernandes, passed away peacefully in her sleep of a heart attack. Born in Glasgow Scotland to Margaret and Edward McCormick. Christine attended school in Cambuslang Scotland. She loved school and graduated near the top of her high school class. She loved to sing and was a member of the choir. As a teenager she enjoyed spending time with her cousins and friends. They frequently visited London and attended many movies, plays and shows. At age 19 Christine sailed on the Queen Elizabeth to Long Island, New York and settled there for a couple of years. In the early 1950’s she moved to Toronto Canada. While in Canada she met and married Al Fernandes. They had a daughter, Valerie. Also in Canada, Christine met her closest friends, Jeri and Bill Cowley. Christine, Al, Jeri, Bill and Valerie (age 2) drove cross country to Los Angeles. They have all remained in Southern California ever since.
In the mid 1960’s Christine met Joe GianFrancesco (owner of the Sherman Oaks newsstand) They dated for many years and eventually married, Christine loved to buy and sell property ( she was a licensed Real estate agent)Christine ran the Sherman Oaks Newsstand with Joe . In her spare time she loved to cook bake and shop at the mall with her daughter and grandchildren. Also, Christine and Joe were world travelers. They traveled from Europe to Alaska to an African Safari. However their favorite trip was a drive to Las Vegas.
Christine was preceded in death by her wonderful mother, Margaret McCormick; her first husband Al Fernandes; and her late husband Joe GianFrancesco. She is survived by her daughter Valerie Koobie and her son–in-law Ken Koobie. She is also survived by grandchildren Bryan Koobie (Xzandra Koobie) and Kristen Koobie and great grandson Troy Koobie.
Christine lived a wonderful, fulfilling life and she will be missed. May “the Queen” as she was known by her family and caregivers…Maria, Melody and Boots) Rest in Peace.
Funeral Services are as follow; Visitation and Rosary taking place at Valley Funeral Home on Monday, June 8th, 2015 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Funeral Mass will be taking place at Mission Rey Chapel on Tuesday, June 9th, 2015 at 9:00am. Please use the San Fernando Mission Cemetery entrance on 11160 Stranwood Ave. Mission Hills,California, 91345 to access the Mission Rey Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart association or Alzheimer’s Research.
