Mariett (Mary) Agnes Wahl

Mariett Agnes (Olson) Wahl passed away peacefully in her Burbank, California, home early on the morning of Sunday, November, 17, 2019, at the age of 90, surrounded by family members. Mary, as she was known to her friends, was born July 12, 1929, in Worthington, Minnesota, the fourth of six children of Carl and Anna Olson. She was raised in Southern Minnesota and graduated from Slayton High School.

She married the love of her life, Donald Wahl, on April 1, 1949, and together they raised 10 children. In the early years of their marriage they farmed in Southern Minnesota until Don took up carpentry and they moved Windom, Minnesota. In 1960 they moved with their then six children to Burbank. The family settled into Burbank and joined Christ Lutheran Church, where Mary remained active. They welcomed four more children in those first six years in California. Mary’s life in those years was centered around her home, children, husband, church, school, Sunday car rides around Southern California, friends and an annual summer road trip to Minnesota to visit family. Mary for years referred to Minnesota as home and lived for those two weeks when she could visit family. But she also grew to love California.

Mary always welcome everybody to her home had a smile and a kind word for everyone, she created a home that neighborhood children and friends were drawn to and where anyone looking for a cup of coffee and something sweet was always welcome. The Wahl home was a place everyone wanted to be and indeed several of her children’s friends did live there at various times over the years. As the children grew up and married those parties continued with grandchildren and even great grandchildren joining the festivities. Her face lit up with that beautiful smile every time someone stopped by for a visit. A stroke slowed her in later years but she remained the same sweet, loving woman who was simply the best wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother anyone could ask for. She will be missed more than she will know by those who love her.

Mary is survived by seven daughters, DeAnn (David) Justesen of Thousand Oaks, California; Cheryl (Ted) Joneson of Burbank; Rhonda Reiner of Newport, Washington; Susan Angel of Sylmar, California; Jan McCarter (Gary) of Burbank; Sandra (Alex) Puatu of Eagle, Idaho; and Robin Cessna of Thousand Oaks, California; and one son James Wahl (Kimberly) of Sylmar, California, survived by a son-in-law Dennis Duprey of Granada Hills, as well as 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Wilkison and Joyce Larson, and a brother, Gary Olson, all of Minnesota and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, son Timothy Wahl, daughter, Tamara Wahl-Duprey, and son-in-law’s, David Cessna, and Larry Angel.

Wish we could have been with you for Mariett’s service. We were with Rod’s mother as you were saying goodbye to yours. I shared the obituary with Kay and will share the photos with her on our next visit.

Our hearts are with you and we understand the emptiness you must be feeling. Most of my memories of Aunt Mary are from the years in Minnesota—the moves to different farms, the Christmas’s with the Olsons and finally at the home in Windom. But I also remember her sweet, caring presence when my mom passed in 2007. The Olson girls were something special. Our prayers are with you.

Mariett was a kind and gentle soul. She kept a watchful eye on her grandkids and always had ice cream in the freezer. She raised a beautiful family, where love and connection and compassion were prevalent. It was a joy to know her and a privledge to love her. Blessed be her name.
