It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our loving father and grandfather, Allan Lyle Mercer of Burnaby. Allan passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the age of 80. Predeceased sixteen months ago by his loving wife, Lorraine after 56 years of marriage. Allan’s memory will be cherished by his children Pamela Grassi (Mike), Jeff (Delores), Trevor (Debbie), and Carolyn Lige (Kerry). Allan was a wonderful grandfather to Stephanie, Matthew, Lucas, Victoria, Alexandra, Jonah, Austin and Bryson. He is survived by his sister, Norma Mercer and brother-in-law Lloyd Murray (predeceased by his sister, Vira Murray). Allan was born and raised in Vancouver where he attended Kitsilano High School. Upon his completion of an Electro-Mechanical Apprenticeship, Allan worked at Armature Electric for 33 years before opening Mercer Electric Motor Service in 1978. As well as being involved in the real estate business, Allan enjoyed an active lifestyle with his family including coaching his sons’ soccer teams, boating, skiing, bike riding and playing tennis. During his latter years, Allan continued to enjoy these activities with his grandchildren. He was a longtime member of the Cascade Lodge. Some of Allan’s happiest moments during his retirement years were spent with family and friends at his vacation homes in Palm Springs and Birch Bay. Big Al will be greatly missed by all that knew him. A donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be a welcome acknowledgement. A celebration of Allan’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 1st at 2 p.m., Willingdon Church, 4812 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby. Reception to follow.
Arrangements under the direction of Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Burnaby, BC.
