It is with great sorrow that the Mannella Family announce the peaceful passing of their beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Assunta Mannella (nee Marino) on July 17, 2023. Our matriarch was born in Serra San Bruno, Province of Vibo Valentia, Italy. We are grateful to our mother for accepting dad’s engagement ring, embarking on a ship in Italy to Halifax, Canada and travelling across the country to Princeton B.C. without a word of English. This was the beginning of her journey as our future mother.
Mom was beautiful, she was strong, she nurtured us, fought for us, believed in us and took pride in us and above all, loved us unconditionally. There aren’t enough words to describe how important she was to her family and what a powerful influence she will continue to be.
Mom was an amazing cook and nothing gave her more pleasure than family gatherings around her table. She had a beautiful sense of humour as we enjoyed making her laugh. She enjoyed watching television, especially Sunday mass from St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and often criticized how terrible the Italian program Spaziolibero was. Her incredible strength came from her family and her faith.
She is survived by her sons Nazareno (Maria), Francesco (Jennifer), Marcello, grandchildren Daniella (Shane), Bruno, Aaron (Hope), Sophia, Loren, great granddaughter Lia, sisters Nora (Giuseppe), Piacentina, Tina (Vincenzo), brother Tony (Rita), Sister in laws Raffaela, Lucia, Assunta (Vincenzo) and Assunta Rachiele along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
She will now be reunited with her loving husband Bruno, sister Maria Pupo, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws as well as friends whose lives she touched.
Many thanks to the doctors and nursing staff of Burnaby General Hospital for their extraordinary care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 26th, 2023 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 3078 Renfrew Street, Vancouver, B.C. Entombment Ocean View Burial Park, South Mausoleum, Burnaby, B.C. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the B.C. Cancer Foundation. Condolences can be offered to the family at www.bellburnaby.com
