Berchmans was a dedicated teacher, talented musician, and later a successful business interpreter during his earlier life in Hong Kong. He was a devout Catholic and was very involved in the Chinese Catholic Community in Hong Kong.
Berchmans started his family with wife and two children in Hong Kong. They immigrated to Winnipeg in 1983. Ever since immigrating to Winnipeg, Berchmans continued to serve in the Catholic community by uniting all the Chinese Catholics under the leadership and direction of the Most Reverend Archbishop Adam Exner at that time. He devoted his time to his family and was present for every aspect for them - be it delivering newspapers early in the morning or bedtime stories of the Saints at night. Berchmans was one of the Founders of the Manitoba Chinese Music Association and together with many musicians they had organized many concerts. Berchmans also conducted for the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies Choir and the Winnipeg Chinese Choir which served to promote Chinese Culture through music. Berchmans also brought together Chinese Catholics studying at the University of Manitoba to start the first Winnipeg Catholic Chinese Student Association at the University of Manitoba.
In retirement, Berchmans relocated to Vancouver. He continued to devote his time for the Chinese Catholic Community when possible. He conducted and played the piano at the 8am Mass at Saint Francis of Xavier Parish for many years. He has also played the organ and piano in many parishes including and not limited to Canadian Martyrs, St. Anthony of Padua, St. John the Apostle, Corpus Christi, St. Teresa, Our Lady of Assumption Parish, all throughout his retirement in Vancouver even up to the age of 90. He also became the conductor for the Chinese Latin Choir and in later years the accompanist for that choir. In the latter part of his retirement, in addition to offering his time to the Catholic Community, he enjoyed spending all his free time with his Children and Grandchildren.
Prior to being admitted to the Hospital on October 10th 2022, it was a real blessing that we had a family gathering on Sunday October 9th. He had a wonderful dim sum lunch with his children, grandchildren as well as his niece Mary and Ken.
Prayer Vigil will be held on October 27th from 6 pm at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (5771 Granville Ave, Richmond BC). Funeral will be held on October 28th, from 11 am also at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (5771 Granville Ave, Richmond BC).
