With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and loving spouse, Chuck Chan Quon, who peacefully passed on March 15, 2024 two months short of his 94th birthday. The loss of this remarkable man has left an irreplaceable void in our lives. His memory will eternally reside in our hearts.
At the young age of seven, our father traveled unaccompanied on a Trans-Pacific ocean trip from China to Canada. This life defining journey shaped him into a courageous, curious and independent entrepreneur. Upon arriving in Canada, he joined his father and uncle in Minitonas, Manitoba where he went right to work helping in the restaurant/grocery store.
Our dad completed his 6th grade education and was offered a position to teach public school in northern Manitoba. However, with his adventurous soul, he embarked on a career journey that took him from a restaurant owner, mechanic, caretaker, business owner to real estate investor.
He understood the challenges of moving to a new country and in his caring and generous ways, he unconditionally supported several families in immigrating and establishing their lives in Canada.
We reflect on the extraordinary life he shared with our beloved mother where their love story began with an arranged traditional marriage reminiscent of the “Joy Luck Club” movie, bridging cultures and overcoming language barriers. Their remarkable 75 years of marriage was a testament to a love that only grew stronger with time. We fondly remember seeing them holding hands everywhere they went.
Following a brief stint in China, our dad returned to Canada to initiate the process of bringing his wife over. Six years later, they were joyously reunited, and he met his eldest daughter for the first time. In Swan River, Manitoba, our parents ran the "CV Cafe" before venturing into a successful “Chuck’s Cycle and Sporting Goods” business. Our dad’s expertise ranged from pinpointing the best fishing spots to putting a precision edge on hockey skates. In 1976, they made the pivotal decision to relocate to Vancouver, BC, where they secured employment and continued to work for many more years.
A source of immense happiness for our dad was his passion for travel, and our mom bravely accompanied him everywhere. On their 50th wedding anniversary, they embarked on a three-month road trip across the USA and Canada in their camper van. Their adventurous spirit took them to Europe, Asia, the Panama Canal, and, most recently, Australia and New Zealand. If not for the unfortunate COVID pandemic, their travel escapades would undoubtedly persist.
Our dad was a man of few words, yet his love for us spoke volumes. His stories, his crazy inventions, unique phonetic spelling, and spirited card game competitions, where he relished skunking us in cribbage, have profoundly enriched the lives of his seven children, fourteen grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. His absence leaves an indelible void on our lives.
Rest in peace, BaBa. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit will live on within us always.
