It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Chui Hing Shum, age 88, on December 23, 2019 (Vancouver).
Her life spanned two continents, two countries and 4 cities. Along her journey Chui Hing's resilience and positive disposition saw her through much transition: as a young wife and mother she moved from Panyu, China to Hong Kong where she worked and raised her children while patiently waiting 10 years for her husband to arrange for their family to join him in Port Alberni, Canada. Once she immigrated, Chui Hing set about home-making in a foreign country with her family and new child: she learnt language to engage her new community, she learnt how to re-create favourite meals with limited access to traditional foods, and she supported her family in this new environment. Along the way Chui Hing assisted extended family members to immigrate to Canada and thus enriched the opportunities of others. With retirement Chui Hing relocated to Vancouver, BC, to be nearer her children and grandchildren, offering assistance to the next generation of her family. At 84 she became GF Strong's oldest patient as she applied a lifetime of determination into recovering from a major accident. Skilled at needlework and an avid gardener who always had flowers to compliment her vegetable garden, Chui Hing continued to be a presence in her local community. Her quick wit, her dim sum, and her love was shared freely with her family. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Chee Wing Shum; her children Harry Shum (Susanna), Shirley Quan (Harvey) and Michael Shum (Karla Greer); as well as her seven grandchildren Richard Shum (Esther Khor), Bryan Quan (Carrie Ma), Christina Wong (Eric), Alex Quan (Sheri Chan), Nicola Quan (Tom Song), Graeme Greer-Shum and Coen Greer-Shum, and her four great-grandchildren Greyson Song, Noah Quan, Charleigh Wong and Harper Song.
Your steady hand guided so many - rest now.
