Peter Chau, 51, of Kaleden, BC, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of February
13th, 2015, at St. Michael’s Hospice in Burnaby, BC, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer.
Peter emigrated from Hong Kong to Vancouver, Canada, with his family in 1976. He excelled
academically despite the challenges of adapting to a new environment and learning a new
language. While growing up, Peter developed a keen sense of humour and was kind and
generous to his friends and family.
Peter was the epitome of the "lifelong learner." He loved to read, travel and try new things. He
enjoyed outdoor activities, and was a walking encyclopedia on gardening, fishing, astronomy
and religion, to name a few.
After graduating from the University of British Columbia, Peter embarked upon a career in
property management. He worked for various private property management companies in BC
before finding his calling in life - to help his community and the disadvantaged. Peter settled on
a very successful career working for BC Housing where he remained for 20 years. He started out
working at the BCH head office in Burnaby for the first few years, and later moved to the
Penticton office in the Southern Okanagan.
Peter spent most of his free time with his good friends, upgrading his professional skills, and
volunteering for various non-profit organizations such as SPARC BC and the Canadian Red
Cross.
After leaving his position as Regional Director for BCH Southern Okanagan Region in 2014,
Peter dedicated his life to spending more time with his family and caring for his 95-year-old
father in Burnaby while volunteering to help his community and the disadvantaged.
Despite the success in his career and many accomplishments in life, Peter remained humble and
generous and lived a very simple life. His greatest joy was to give back and help those around
him. He is especially well loved and respected by his friends and colleagues at BC Housing and
the Canadian Red Cross.
Peter was preceded in death by his mother, Kit Ching. He is survived by his father Chi Keung,
brother Gary, sister Tina, brother-in-law Andrew, and nieces Charlotte and Krystal.
As per Peter's wishes, a private cremation and burial will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank the loving staff members at the BC Cancer Agency, Palliative
Care Unit of Burnaby Hospital and St. Michael's Hospice for their professionalism, compassion,
and excellent care for Peter during this difficult journey.
Special thanks to our many relatives, CCCV brothers and sisters, friends from BC Housing and
the Canadian Red Cross. Your many kind visits with Peter while he was still strong not only
meant the world to him and his family, but also spoke volumes about a life well lived.
