Pianist • Composer • Educator • Scholar • Beloved Family Man
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Daniel Sakari Mahlberg on Friday, September 19th, 2025, at Burnaby General Hospital, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones and passed peacefully.
Daniel is survived by his devoted wife, Lida; his cherished son, Aiden; his father, Kari; and his sister, Christy. He will be deeply missed as a loving husband, father, son, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, teacher, and friend.
With over three decades of teaching experience, Daniel inspired generations of students through his work as an educator, pianist, composer, and senior examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music. He held a PhD in Historical Musicology from the University of British Columbia and was widely respected for his pedagogical excellence and artistic insight. His students—many of whom went on to win international awards and pursue professional careers—remember him for his warmth, patience, and unwavering belief in their potential.
Beyond his teaching, Daniel was the foremost authority on Finnish composer Leevi Madetoja. His scholarship on Madetoja’s life and works not only honoured his Finnish heritage but also brought renewed attention to the composer’s legacy and enriched the global understanding of Finnish music history.
Daniel’s passion for music extended into every corner of his life, and he believed deeply in its power to build community and foster human connection. Daniel’s dedication to music aligned closely with the purpose of the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, where he once served as an instructor. The school’s mission to create inclusive communities of musical learning reflects his values and honours his legacy. He asked that, instead of flowers, people who wished to honour his memory consider a gift in his memory to the School of Music:

We mourn the loss of his generous spirit and kind-hearted soul and will miss the man who always went the extra mile for those he loved. His legacy lives on in the music he taught, the lives he touched, and the love he gave so freely.
With love and remembrance,
Lida, Aiden, Kari, Christy, and the entire extended Kam-Mahlberg family
