Born in Vancouver, BC to parents Winifred Murphy (née Lockie) and Paul David Murphy. Denise was raised in Vancouver along with her younger sister, Bev. Her young life included happy memories of vacations at Cultus Lake, walks at English Bay with her sister and Aunt Marjorie, and horseback riding at Stanley Park with her sister and father. She also enjoyed attending an occasional Vancouver Canucks game, in the WHL at that time.
Denise attended Little Flower Academy, Sacred Heart Convent, and Magee High School. Her mother and father divorced when she was 11, leaving her mother to raise both girls. This was a sad time for Denise, with her mother returning to her legal career to support the family, and her father’s death in 1956.
Denise left high school early and began working for the Royal Bank. She married young and sought to create a family, something she wanted more than anything. Mom lived her life for others devoting her time and energy to raising four children, mostly on her own. After several years working at home, she returned to the Royal Bank where she later met Frank; they married in 1980 and together blended a family of seven mostly grown children. In 1985 Mom and Frank moved from Vancouver to Richmond. She continued working for the Royal Bank for many years until her retirement. Mom and Frank enjoyed their retirement years spending time with family. When Frank’s health started to decline, Mom cared for him until his death in 2008.
Mom filled her days with plenty of happy outings and fun activities with family. She always welcomed a visit, offering a warm cup of tea, something sweet and a chat. Mom’s health began to suffer and later she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. She spent her final year living at St. Vincent’s Langara Long Term Care, in Vancouver. Special thanks to her eldest daughters, Debbie and Bonnie, for being with her during her most difficult final days and hours.
She is survived by her children Debbie (Bobby), Bonnie (Tom), Margo (Kevin), and David (Anne); grandchildren Michelle (Jeff), Erin (Evan), Matt, Tayvie, Erik, Kevin and Lauren; great-grandchildren Isla, Dean, Jack, and Violet. She is also survived by her sister Bev and family; stepchildren Doug, Wayne and Kathy and their families; former spouse Stephen Jewett and his son Steve Jewett, and a host of others whom she considered family.
Thank you to Brian and staff at St. Vincent’s Langara for their care and comfort.
