It is with sadness that we announce the death of our sister, aunt, and Lola, Editha Alcuitas-Abellaneda on March 6, 2025. She died peacefully at the St. Michaels’ Hospice in Burnaby, B.C., surrounded by her close relatives.
She will be buried in the Philippines in her home city of Carcar, Cebu. A viewing will be held at St. Mary’s Church on 5251 Joyce St., Vancouver on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 10 A.M. followed by mass at 12, and a reception at the parish hall.
Edith immigrated to Canada on March 7, 1973 to join her brother Teodoro and wife Corazon in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After briefly working in Winnipeg, she moved to Vancouver, B.C. in 1974, where she eventually landed a job with the Burnaby Hospital, working for 22 years until her retirement in August 2002.
She was the 6th child of Ruperto Alcuitas of Carcar, Cebu and Isabel Llacuna of Mambajao, Misamis Oriental. She had four brothers - Juanito, Alfonso, Manuel and Teodoro, and three sisters - Pauline, Cynthia and Luvisminda. She finished her secondary schooling at the Carcar Academy and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree major in Philosophy at the University of San Carlos. Edith was active in her church community and was involved in many parish activities.
While she had no child of her own, she was ‘mother’ to many children of relatives and friends whom she cared for lovingly, some even until their teen years. She was a generous and compassionate person and shared her resources with others, helping some of her nephews and nieces complete their post secondary studies.
She will be sadly missed by her many relatives and friends in the Philippines, the U.S. and Canada. During her nine days stay at the hospice, relatives flew in from Seattle, Florida and Oklahoma, Winnipeg and Edmonton to visit her, some staying at her bedside until her death.
She is survived by her husband Rolando in Burnaby, brother Teodoro and wife Corazon in Vancouver, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister Pauline who died in Winnipeg on November 30, 2024.
Funeral arrangements is handled by Ocean View Cemetery, 604-435-6688.
