Evelyn Wong was born in Vancouver on April 20th, 1929, and died at the age of 85 in VGH on March 9th, 2015. She was surrounded by her children during her last hours, and went peacefully to join her husband Jack (who died in 2013). Evelyn was the daughter of Yee Tong Chin and Jong Chin. She was a loving and attentive wife to Jack (married 56 years), beloved mother to Kathy (Dave), David, Louise, Gwen (Michael), and Patsy (Jurgen) and a gentle and kind Po Po to her grandchildren Ian, Jack, Jenna, Ming, and Meigan. She enjoyed time spent with her extended family and siblings.
Evelyn grew up in Chinatown and attended Strathcona Elementary and Grandview High School where she took secretarial courses. Evelyn was bright and excelled at school. She also consistently ranked first at Chinese School.
When Evelyn was 13 years old she worked at a grocery store on Commercial Drive, and then at HY Louie after she graduated from high school. She joined MK Wong and Associates in her late 40s where her secretarial skills were a valuable asset. She eventually retired at age 70 to provide much appreciated care to her grandchildren.
Evelyn was also a wonderful cook and baker, known for her chiffon cakes, apple and peach pies. Although married to a tailor, she sewed matching vests and pants for her three youngest daughters. She enjoyed watching PBS shows, listening to Andre Rieu and making weekly trips to the library. She was an avid reader of newspapers, financial magazines and biographies. Annual family excursions to Taku Resort on Quadra Island were highlights, as well as travels to Europe with her husband Jack and guide David.
Our family is deeply thankful for the dedicated care given by mom’s family physician Dr. Laurie Bootsman. We are also very appreciative of the care provided by Mom’s wonderful caregivers Maribel, Cynthia and Sheryl.
We are so grateful for our gentle and loving matriarch. Her values and wise grace will live on in our hearts forever. As per Evelyn’s request, a private service will take place on March 25th. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation may be made (reference Tribute Page – Evelyn Wong).
