Feng Zhang was a father to two sons, a husband, and an educator who died on April 13, 2021 at the age of 52, after battling cancer for over a year. He was born in 1968 in the Luonan County of Shaanxi, China where he was the third of four children. A lifelong learner, Feng was a top student in his county throughout his primary schooling, being admitted into Sun Yat-sen University to study archeology in 1987. It was there that he met his wife, Wenling Chen, whom he married in 1995. Upon graduating, he pursued a Master of Philosophy degree in anthropology at Hong Kong Baptist University, completing his thesis in 1999. In 2000, Feng had his first son, Jonathan in Guangzhou. Seeking a better life for his new family, Feng looked for opportunities overseas. He was admitted into the doctoral program in Sociology at UBC, moving to Vancouver in January of 2001. He was joined in December that year by his wife and newborn son. Undeterred by having to adapt to a new language and culture, Feng embraced his new home. It was there that he welcomed his second son, Andy, in 2005. Feng completed his PhD in 2007, under the guidance of Professor Graham E. Johnson. After years spent learning, Feng himself became an educator, tutoring and guiding newly-landed students. In 2013, he established his own tutoring and education consulting business, Berton College, often referring to it as his third child. It was there that he helped many students and their families pursue their dreams in Canada, as he had done so himself. Feng was actively involved in the Sun Yat-Sen University Vancouver Alumni Association and enjoyed camping, skiing, and playing golf and tennis in his spare time.
Feng was a man dedicated to his family, unafraid of adversity, and committed to living life to the fullest. His children will always be grateful for the time he spent with them enjoying the outdoors, playing sports, and teaching them lifelong lessons. Feng is survived by his wife Wenling, sons Jonathan and Andy, brother Hong, sister Juan, and extended family and friends.
