September 5, 1933 - March 3, 2020
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Hyo-Rae "Helen" Hwang at her care home (Foyer Maillard) in Coquitlam, B.C. She was surrounded by loved ones leading up to her final moments.
Predeceased by her loving husband Jung-Eun Hwang (2016) of 61 years, and her precious daughter, Susan (1977). She is survived by her children, Eileen (Cameron), Michael (Eun-Young), Glenda; her grandchildren, Justin, Ben; her younger brothers, Hyo-Jook (Yong-Ja), Hyo-Joong (Kyong-Ja); and younger sister, Hyo-Ja (Won-Yong).
Born in Korea, she immigrated with her family in 1972, first briefly settling in Toronto, then Chicago, and finally calling Vancouver home since 1975.
Her diligence, strong work ethics, and her strive for excellence along with her good nature, love of people, and strong Christian faith were passed down from both her parents whom she loved and respected. Helen lived her life with vigour and enthusiasm. She loved learning and had many interests and hobbies.
With her husband she owned and operated a variety of businesses in the lower mainland, including a hardware/gift ware (Campbell's Hardware), dry cleaners, and a convenience store. She studied fashion design in Korea and was a highly skilled and talented seamstress/dressmaker, specializing in wedding and prom dresses. Also a trained opera singer who sang in Italian, German, English, and Korean. She performed with the Douglas College Choir, Samsung Church, among other Korean church choirs, and Zion Choir, where they performed at New York's Carnegie Hall in Oct. 2011.
Self taught in home repairs/renovations including, upholstery, tiling, plumbing, drapery to name a few. She enjoyed the challenge and the savings that came from DIY projects. On top of all that she was an excellent cook of Korean food. Her dishes and recipes sought out by everyone she knew.
She loved and lived life to the fullest. Thank you for teaching us so many valuable life lessons. You will be missed by all. Till we meet again.
The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the wonderful and caring staff at Foyer Maillard, especially in 2B.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Society of B.C.
