John was born in Vancouver, on June 8th, 1949 to Murray and Colleen McRae, younger brother to his much-loved sister Linda.
John was an intrepid traveler, avid dancer, devoted friend and family man. John is survived by his uncle Richard Barber (Patricia), brother-in-law Ron Cann Sr., nephews Ron Cann (Rani) and Steve Cann (Joanna), great niece Maxime, great nephews Jackson, Luka, Colby and Owen, and cousins Teri McCallen (Dan) and Deanne Barber (Mike). John was pre-deceased by his parents Murray and Colleen McRae and his sister Linda Cann. John was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by his family and many friends the world over.
After touring the S.S. Canberra at 12 years old, John developed a keen interest in ocean liners and world travel. Later as an adult John became a travel agent so he could share his love of travel. During his long career in the travel industry John saw the whole world. His delight and enthusiasm for the many countries he visited inspired his family and friends to accompany him on many wonderful treks and cruises which they will always remember fondly.
John’s love of animals was the inspiration for his pet sitting company, “My Best Friend” which he ran alongside his work in the travel industry. Over the years many people left their beloved pets in John’s care knowing their pets would be well looked after.
A true gentleman, John always treated people with dignity and had a kind word and a positive outlook for everyone. John’s big warm smile and happy chuckle will be remembered by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff on the 10th floor of the Jim Pattison building at Vancouver General Hospital for their gentle care and attention.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made, in memory of John, to the SPCA or Union Gospel Mission.
