My heart swells with love when I think of my friend Lewis. And it aches when I think of his family and loved ones that have been without him this past year. I don't stop missing him and I don't stop think of you. Sending you all much love.


I was lucky to meet Lewis very shortly after starting working at IBI, about 15 years ago.
He was always a good mentor by nature: Lewis Enjoyed explaining a lot of things to new people and in general spreading  so much knowledge that sometimes the simple question will become a complex answer of so many different things to consider about it. :)
I learned a lot from him.

I enjoyed his casual but engaging conversation and some good laughs.

He was the starter and column of many Company  "traditions" like the Chinese king  Crab and Prawn  Dinners he organized every year, and the fresh blueberry orders in summer.
We shared Many projects and many memories that  will not be forgotten.

My love and prayers for Canny, his family, friends and loved ones.

I have very fond memories of Lewis at the many dinners he hosted for his work family.  Of special memory to me was the way Lewis took care of me like a big brother on an associates trip to LA.  We had coffee at Barney’s and were subsequently late for our flight home. Lewis negotiation skills with airport staff ensured we made it back home. I will miss him. 

For many years, my yearly summer visit to Vancouver had always meant catching up with Lewis, my favorite cousin-in-law, and having a fun outing with Lewis and Canny to somewhere interesting. Lewis was engaging, kind, smart, worldly, and fun loving. He always brightened up a room, wherever he went. Whenever we met, we always had a great time talking about different things. Lewis was a food connoisseur, world traveler and a photographer. He liked to be behind his camera instead of in front of it. I tried to look for photos of him from our many fun outings, and so far I could only find one. That’s an old photo of Lewis and I having ice cream cones somewhere in Alberta during a car camping trip. Canny managed to take the picture while Lewis was busy enjoying his ice cream. I know a life is meant to be celebrated. Lewis had lived joyously, generously and genuinely in his professional and personal life. He had accomplished a lot of things in his lifetime.  I am saddened to think that our conversation two summers ago was our last one. I regret taking his being here with us for granted. I will miss him dearly. His warm and witty personality and his easy smile will stay with me always. And I will treasure the great times we had together.

Dear Canny, 

My deepest condolences to you and your family. The loss of Lewis will be felt by many who knew him. He was an exceptional person and architect. He was my mentor, my friend, my colleague and when he was advising me on something, I was feeling my father talking to me. I was very fortunate working with him. Lots of good memories....
When I joined IBI and for the first time asked him to be my mentor, he smiled and said: “why me?”
I told him: do you know what people call you in the office???  “live encyclopedia”!
He laughed and said: “My wife says the same”.

He will be sorely missed!!!

If this appears to be a repeat, please forgive me, as I seem to have  lost my original message to the internet.

After retiring from IBI, I would think back over the prior 25 years or so, and entering these thoughts were those of Lewis, wondering when we could do a foursome trip to Africa, or parts of it he and Canny had not visited. 
If ever I do go back, Lewis will be with me in spirit, and together we will find Stanley searching for Livingstone.

Sadly, it did not happen. I dare to say that Lewis would have handled all the travel details, ranging from airline and car-hire reservations, through shopping, and all that accompanies maintaining links to the office while away from his desk.

Reflecting on the desk: Lewis is not necessarily best, but certainly well remembered, for being the Design-Build Engineer of paper colums that supported the weight of ideas recorded in  graphite and ink, as well as successive pages, extending from the desk-top upward to the ceiling, and then ranging outward laterally in four directions, bearing informative widom, seemingly starting from the mid 12th century until modern times.
Those columns grew exponentially, until the desk, Lewis himself, and indeed the entire office, were awash in paper.
But, there never was a moment when an important, sought-after fax, email hard copy, standard steel-fire-safing detail, pink telephone message slip, or stapled morsels of building code; could not be extracted within seven seconds, without ever upsetting the origaminous arrangement of paper.

Lewis would never answer a question without first asking let me first ask you this question....
.... and it will be on this note that Lee joins me in sending our condolences to Canny and family, as I bid a fond farewell to a friend who never declined an invitation to join in working through the night to get a task done by daybreak. 
And, it is without any doubt, that Lewis will find the anwers to all those questions.

Our hearts go out to the Huey family and we keep you in our thoughts and prayers.  

Lewis was an Associate with IBI and had been with us for more than 35 years, his legacy stretching back through Hancock Bruckner Eng + Wright Architects. He was a Registered Architect with a love of history and an in-depth knowledge of construction, a hardworking individual, and extremely dedicated to the work he did.  He mentored many of us along the way. 
 
For years, Lewis had been the heart of our social engagements, whether it was organizing a dinner for 30+ crab enthusiasts or coordinating the logistics of salads and games for the summer barbeques.  Lewis enjoyed discovering new places, travelling, interacting with people to listen and share his stories, and was passionate about local food and street life.

We reflect upon the continuous reliability that Lewis had, the outstanding mentorship he provided to everyone around him, and of course, the handling of the annual blueberry farm sales in which we all took part, at some point, in the office.

His loss will be felt deeply amongst our staff and colleagues.


We would like to extend our most sincere condolences to the Huey family and his wife Canny. Lewis was a kind, generous, and loving man who never failed to put others first. His positive energy was contagious to everyone around him. Speaking with him always made you feel uplifted and there’s no doubt those blessed to call Lewis family or friend share the same feeling. He had an incredible zeal for life and loved to travel. Some of our fondest memories are sharing travel stories and life philosophy over our many family dinners throughout the years. Lewis will forever remain in our hearts and we will forever cherish our precious memories together.
