Passing away peacefully in her sleep, Luz is at rest and reunited with family and friends. Born in Iloilo City, Philippines on June 28, 1926, she was the daughter and predeceased by her parents Domingo and Fortunata; Siblings Agapita, Milagros, and Ambrosio , and nieces and nephews Mercedes, Crisostomo, Rene, Zorahayda, Danilo, Nito, D’artagnan, Sandra, and Eppie.
Luz was an army registered nurse. She travelled to New Jersey on a student exchange program in the early 50’s and immigrated to Canada a few years later with an offer of employment and permanent landed immigrant status. She worked in various hospitals across Canada, including Inuvik and The Northwest Territories, eventually moving to Vancouver and working at Shaughnessy Hospital. She was proud to have owned a home close to the hospital in Vancouver’s West side. Known to all her friends and family across the globe as 707, it also became home for her nieces, nephews, and sister-in-law, whom she sponsored to come to Canada.
An excellent opportunity arose to work in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where she cared for the royalty of Saudi Arabia for 9 years. The opportunity and experience were a true honor. She traveled extensively around the world and learned how to speak many different languages. She loved demonstrating how she could speak Japanese, which she learned during World War II. Even in retirement, she continued to travel to the Philippines twice a year and would devote her time to her garden in her Vancouver home.
She will be greatly missed by her sister -in- law Rosalina, her nieces and nephews, Juliet (Domenico), Romeo (Fe), Nadina (Arturo), Nilo (Anita) Leah, Jean (Junie), Melly, Domingo Jr. (Virginia), and her many grand-nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to all the nurses, doctors, and staff at Purdy Pavilion for their unwavering care and support of our aunt.
