He was predeceased by his parents Fausta (née Ciriani) and Domenico; his wife Rita (née Trentin); and his four brothers, Silvano, Giovanni, Armando, and Franco. He is survived by his three children Fabio, Sonya (Sean), and Nadia (Donnie); two brothers Narciso and Luigi; and his much-loved grandchildren Olivia, Anna, Gabriella, Luca, Ava, Danielle, and Lauren.
Born in Cusano di Zoppola, Italy, Mario came to Canada in 1956 and made his home in Vancouver. Here, he met his beloved wife, Rita, and together they built a life grounded in laughter, love, and family.
Mario’s garden was his pride, where he grew vegetables from seed and found peace in tending to them. He was curious about the world and loved learning—especially about geography and astronomy. He also enjoyed making his own wine, savoring it with dinner and happily sharing it with friends and family.
Mario held a lifelong affection for Italy—its food, art, and music. His home was often filled with the voice of Luciano Pavarotti, and he spoke with admiration about Michelangelo’s La Pietà and the ingenuity of the ancient Romans, whose achievements he described as “unbelievable!” On weekends, he rarely missed watching Serie A soccer matches, a tradition that connected him to his roots.
Mario had a generous spirit and genuine concern for others. He never passed a person in need without offering help, and he liked being present for those who needed company or encouragement. His sharp wit and playful humour could lighten any moment. His well-timed one-liners and antics brought joy to those around him and will never be forgotten.
Mario’s heart truly belonged to his grandchildren. He delighted in creating all sorts of games for them to play—the louder the better! As they grew older, he never lost interest in their lives, always eager to hear what they were up to. Phone conversations with him were filled with laughter and encouragement, and his support was a constant presence in their lives.
Each night before bed, Mario would quietly say, “God, I’m in your hands… You know better than me.” It was a simple phrase that captured his faith and humour. Now, he rests in God’s hands, leaving behind a life beautifully lived—his way.
“I’ve lived a life that’s full, I traveled each and every highway, and more, much more than this, I did it my way.” – Frank Sinatra
