Slipped away Saturday morning, Feb. 11, 2012. Born May 21, 1919, Martha grew up with five siblings on a farm in Dunkirk, Saskatchewan. She married Frank Spencer in 1938, moved with him to Rossland, BC, then to Burnaby, BC in 1942, where she stayed 70 years, happily with Frank until his death in 1990. Martha was a crack lawn bowler, a great curling fan, and for many years an enthusiastic Yuma snowbird. She was bright, straightforward, and appreciative. She loved to play cards, and one of our typical memories is of her in Spain, finding a group to play bridge with, and having a great time (probably winning), although she didn’t speak a word of their language. Independent, she often said cheerfully, “Don’t worry about me! I’ll be fine!” And she was, almost to the end.
Martha would tell everyone she had “three wonderful sons”, Ron, Ken and David, “and four wonderful daughters-in-law”, Margrit, Judy, Sylvia and Sharon. She was a caring Grandma to her 10 grandchildren and “GG” to 11 great-grandchildren. She will also be greatly missed by her sister, Phyllis Sanderson, her sister-in-law and pal, Jean Grimard, nephews and nieces, and many good friends at the Mulberry. Martha’s family and friends will celebrate her life Sunday, Feb. 19, at 1:30 p.m., Forest Lawn Funeral Chapel, 3789 Royal Oak Ave., Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to a charity of your choice.
