We were very saddened to hear about Richard's passing. It was our joy to meet and know Richard over the past few months. We enjoyed many moments of conversation, fellowship, and laughter. Also, we were so blessed to know that Richard, Lori, and Lizzy were enjoying their time in our church.  May God's deep comfort and precious peace be with the entire family. When we first met, and became good/best friends back in the 90s(1991) at Campus Computers. 

Richard was always available if and when I needed an ear to listen to my aches and pains after a breakup, or when I was feeling down and out. He was not judgmental, and was always supportive when I needed someone to lean on or help guide me on way. I will never forget our 2/3AM Calhoun coffee meet ups and hanging out in the living room and deck at your house by the PNE.

Lizzy, you meant the world to your dad. Not a day or conversation would go by without him talking and raving about you and your new accomplishments. When we were together I could see how much he loved and adored you. You are and always will be his shining star. The way he would spoil when we would go out, cherish those moments you had with him and if you need me I will always be there for you.

RIP my friend and brother. I will always think of you and the great times and conversations we shared together.
You will be sorely missed, love you!!

Even though I may not have known Rich as long as some of you may have, I am just as thankful to have had Rich be a good friend in my life. Rich was a kind and loving person who would put others' needs first.  He made sure that he could help them out the best way he knew how. Rich and I had some great times hanging out together and Boston Pizza was our go-to spot. It was there that we would talk about what was going on in our lives and we would use this time to share with each other how we were really feeling. I will always remember these times and I will miss not having them anymore.

Everyone is sad and angry that Rich was taken away from us way too early. We know that Rich is looking down at us smiling and being pain-free.  Rich was a good friend and a great father. He will be missed and will be forever in our hearts.

I want to send my deepest condolences to Richard's family. 
Rich was an amazing human being, full of light and love especially for his daughter. You are going to be dearly missed Rich.  May your soul rest in peace, thank you for your kindness, your friendship, and all the laughter we shared. 
 
 

A memory of us back in the days, and some of the good days we’ve shared. One of the most genuine men I know.  He’s always been so gentle, humble, and persevered under all circumstances. 

Lizzy - I remember when you were born, I’ve never seen so much joy. To say your dad loved you so much is an under statement. You meant the world to him, and will always be.  

Though we were on other sides of the world, we were like long lost brothers. The times we did get to jump on the phone it was like we just saw each other yesterday. I remember when you began your journey with God, you stayed on the path, and truly seeked Him first. I’m so glad we got to spend more time when we did. Rest in peace dear Richard, you’ll be greatly missed, and richly remembered, until we meet again. 

The first time we met Richard in Alpha, we were deeply moved by his kindness and desire to know the Christian faith. After that, he continued to pursue God. with the help of many people in the church, he enthusiastically participated in important gatherings such as Bible studies, and Sunday services.

What we know about him is that he longed for God’s guidance in his life. He often asks privately about theology and how to follow God in several gatherings. We were deeply moved by his positive attitude and non-stop attendance at church.  

He loved his daughter, his mom, his family, and the most of all Lori. 

In the end, he was taken away and his friends in the church felt very sad.

He was a good brother in the church family , we will miss you Richard.

My deepest condolences to the Lum family. As everyone else, I was shocked to hear about the terrible news.  I will miss his laugh, his honesty and funny stories he would like to tell. He would always talk about Lizzy and would tell me how much she meant to him. Richard, I will never forget you as a fellow co-worker who looked after me and was supportive when I needed help and as a friend who I admired as a big brother. You will be missed by many friends and family. RIP 

I’ve been working closely with Rich for more than 2 years, he was a key member of our team and cared tremendously about looking after our customers, which he did exceedingly well.  However his number one priority was being a great dad to Lizzy – whether it was taking her to or from school, or the orthodontist, or whatever, just spending time with her was so important to him.  And also being with Lori gave him so much happiness, especially their trips together to the Sunshine Coast.  And closer to home he also enjoyed their Saturday nights out for bingo!  We were more than just work colleagues, we became friends.  And although it still hard to believe he’s gone, just trying to take some solace knowing that he was comfortable enough to share his personal life with me.  RIP Rich

I had the pleasure of working with Rich since December of 2020. I was personally moved by his devotion to his daughter; it spoke so well of his character. He was so proud to be Dad to Lizzy, THE most important person in his life. His wish was to both always be there to protect her and gently let her go and let her choose her path to happiness. He loved her perfectly and with all of his heart. I know she will carry forward the best of Rich. 

I knew him to put his friends and family first and was a very giving person. He worked so hard, was a master at his craft and we all inspired to be 'as good as Rich." This picture was in his opinion me capturing him 'slacking off'....in actuality it was a work lunch with his boss, whereby he proceeded to razz me for growing up in Courtenay. Who's the other Courtenay friend he has...I think he thought we had a small town 'wholesomeness' (stifle cough) that he liked.

I knew we found a kinship when he shared his reconnection with his faith and to God, and his goals; he was always striving to be a better human being. I saw Rich really find a place he belonged and had value at work, and he always shared that his future was so bright to him. He was in love, and he had PLANS! 

It was nice to be friends with Rich, he was loyal, kind and a student of life. He was so funny. And most importantly,.......he was happy! 

Love and prayers to all his friends and family. He will forever live in our hearts and in Lizzy's spirit! 

Rich was an amazing friend, the kind of guy you could count on to have your back in the good and the bad times.  No matter the situation, he was always willing to help out.  I still remember when I was going through a rough breakup and in the late night, he drove out to come have coffee with me and talk and just be there.  He was so loving and supportive of everyone around him.  He is truly missed.  

Lizzy, Your dad was an amazing man.  There isn't a single conversation I've had with him where we haven't talked about you.  He loved you with all of his heart and you were his entire world.

Rich was the first friend i made when i moved to Vancouver in 2002. 

His cutting sense of humour let me know immediately that we would either be the best of friends or enemies.  I wasn’t immediately sure which. 

It turned out that we would become great friends. I enjoyed telling him about my latest misadventures. He thoroughly enjoyed retelling and exaggerating those to everyone else.  Our desks were separated by a thin wall, so i got to hear him tell my stories with so much laughter. It was hard to get upset at someone who was obviously having such a great time, even at my expense. 

Our friendship wasn’t one sided. I was broke and barely surviving from pay check to pay check in those days. Rich paid for more of my dinners in those years than I did.  He’d go out of his way to make sure I never got the cheque.  He seemed to enjoy taking care of me, and others. 

Later when I went through some really tough times, he let me move into his basement for an absolute steal for rent.  I don’t know where I would be without Rich, but I’m quite sure I would not be in the position I’m in today without his help.  I only wish that I could have helped him during his low moments, in the way he helped me.  I just wasn’t equipped to do it at the time. 

We used to joke about being in a “brotherhood” but it wasn’t really a joke beneath the silliness.  He was a brother to me and I was to him.  I will forever regret letting some stupid argument derail such an important friendship.  I just thought there was more time to work things out.  Sometimes there’s not.  

I’ll miss you Rich.  I hope you have the peace in death that I could not help you achieve in life.
