“Bob” as he preferred to be called, was born in Kuala Belait, Brunei Darussalam to his Father: Tan Kean Chye and Mother: Sim Kim Lean (“Lily Tan”.)
Bob was raised in Kuala Belait and attended St. John’s School (1961-1973), then transferred to St. Michael’s Secondary School in Seria (1975.) Bob then continued his education in Canada by attending Columbia College (1977.) He later attended BCIT (1977-1980) to study Natural Gas and Petroleum.
Bob returned to Brunei to seek employment. He was employed by Reading and Bates Borneo Drilling Co. Ltd (1981-1982.) His last post was working for Sperry Sun (1982-1987) as a Borehole Survey Engineer. Bob immigrated to Canada in August 1987 to join his fiancée, Susan. They were married in October 1987.
Bob was a member of the Lions Club in Kuala Belait. From conversations with Bob, he had been an active member of the club. Bob shared his varied experiences while working offshore on the oil rigs. He was amazed by the creations of God after watching dolphins and schools of tropical fish swimming around the rigs.
In 1989, Bob was hired by Canada Post as a full-time employee. He was an extremely hard-working employee who did not take a single sick day until his illness befell him. While sorting through his paper work, we found a certificate detailing his “Perfect Attendance for 10 years.”
To those who knew Bob, they knew about his passion for photography. He was an avid photographer and the family house was filled with pictures of his children, friends and family. Bob loved to collect art work and souvenirs whenever he travelled outside of the country. Bob loved to travel in his younger days. He also loved to receive gifts of souvenirs from anyone who travelled to an exotic locale. Bob had a deep appreciation for music and listened to many different genres. He had a vast collection of CDs and a stereo system that allowed him to enjoy his music when he was no longer able to travel. He could often be found lounging in his recliner listening to one of his favourite artists. Bob loved all types of cuisines and was a talented home cook back in the day. He was an avid reader of the National Geographic and any other book or magazine about travel and other countries. Bob had a heart of gold. He was well known for his generosity and his eagerness to help others. Bob also loved hosting dinners and get togethers for his friends and family.
Bob is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter, Tiffany, son-in-law, Attila, grandson, Alexander; and daughter, Trisha and partner, Jacob. Bob will be greatly missed by the many who knew him.
