Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Shiu Ying was the eldest of seven siblings, raised by her parents, Chiu Wen Sung and Yen Yuen Nian. A proud graduate of Taipei First Girls’ High School (北一女), she went on to study nutrition at Fu Jen Catholic University (輔仁大學). After graduation, she worked as a hospital nutritionist, dedicating herself to the care and well-being of others.
In 1971, at the age of 23, she traveled to Japan to further her studies, where she met the love of her life, Henry Kuan. The couple married in Hong Kong in 1973 and began their life together running a beauty supply business. Together, they welcomed three children: Alice (1975), Winnie (1976), and Tommy (1982).
Shiu Ying’s life journey took her across continents—from Hong Kong to San Francisco in 1984, then to Montreal in 1989, and finally settling in Vancouver in 1991. There, she and her husband established Kingdom Beauty Supplies, a business that continues to this day.
A woman of quiet strength and unwavering faith, Shiu Ying joined the path of Taoism in 1994 and later opened Holy House in Surrey in 1998. Her resilience was evident in her health battles—surviving ovarian cancer in 2008, overcoming a stroke in 2019, and undergoing dialysis beginning in 2021.
Despite life’s challenges, Shiu Ying remained grounded, selfless, and devoted to her family. She cherished simple joys: spending time with loved ones, watching Chinese soap operas, and finding meaning in the everyday. She was never drawn to fame or recognition—only to love, care, and duty. She was a nurturing mother, a beloved grandmother, a caring older sister, and a steadfast wife.
Shiu Ying Chiu leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and humility. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
