Susumu Tabata

Obituario de Susumu Tabata
EN EL CUIDADO DE

Ocean View Funeral Home & Burial Park

Dr. Susumu Tabata

December 9, 1925 - February 5, 2024

Susumu died peacefully on Gabriola Island in the home he built on the ocean he studied for his entire life.

Born in Steveston BC, Sus was one of nearly 22,000 Japanese Canadians who were forcibly uprooted and displaced from their coastal BC homes. Interned in Kaslo BC, then Midway, he was the first internee to return to the University of British Columbia in 1947, 2 years before Japanese Canadians were free to return to the coast. He was a member of the Civil Liberties club at UBC and his association with progressive academics and poet Dorothy Livesay inspired the work - Call My People Home. His politics were aligned with Tommy Douglas, giving way to a lifelong support of causes which support social justice.

Sus became an oceanographer working at the Pacific Oceanographic Group in Nanaimo BC in the late 50s, and then earning his PhD at Tokyo University (Todai) with family in tow. 'Sus helped found the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney BC. Among other research projects, he had noticed that the weather forecasters of Canada sent two ships (HMCS Quadra and Vancouver) to 6-week tours of duty at Ocean Station Papa (50°N and 145°W) and didn’t take any oceanographic measurements on the way there or back. He changed that and created the Line-P program, the single best system created anywhere in the world for observing climate change in the oceans.’ - H.Freeland.

Predeceased by Barbara, his wife of 61 years, he is survived by daughters Susanne and Renee, son Ken, grandchildren Jesse (Kirsten), Jared (Cara); and Sara. He is predeceased by parents Hyozo and Shizu Tabata, and is survived by 5 of 10 siblings - Mariko (Maggie), Sachi, Tak, Kumi, and Kazy, their families, and the families of predeceased siblings Sho, Sharon (Sumiko), Emi, Shig, and Mako; a large extended family of Atagis, Matsushitas, Nishis, Hamaguchis, Ozawas; many friends in the Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society; many colleagues in the geo sciences community; hundreds of friends around the world, including old neighbours in Victoria and his beloved Gabriola.

An independent thinker with a world view and a lover of jazz, his spirit endures through inspiring others to ‘think for yourself’.

Funeral Service will be held at Steveston Buddhist Temple presided by Reverend Grant Ikuta, 4360 Garry Street in Richmond, BC on Saturday, February 24th. 9:30-11:00 am viewing, 11am-12pm funeral service.

Later this spring, a Celebration of Life will be held in Victoria to honour both Susumu and Barbara.
